Living in Fries, Virginia
A small Grayson County mill town on the New River, where the New River Trail ends.
Living in Fries
Fries real estate starts with the river. Fries is a small town in Grayson County, with about 450 people at the 2020 census, and the New River runs right through it. So does the New River Trail, the state park's rail trail, which ends in Fries at the end of a 5.5-mile spur. The trailhead looks out over the river and the Fries dam, the one in the photo at the top of this page.
Fries was built as a mill town. Colonel Francis Fries built the dam and a cotton mill here, and the town was incorporated in 1902. The Washington Mill ran from 1903 until it closed in 1989, and the mill has since been taken down. The dam is still there, and so are the homes the mill town left behind.
Homes in Fries
Many homes in Fries are row houses from the mill-town days, and some of them have views of the river. Fries is a mix of vacation homes and homes where people live year-round, so you'll find weekend places and full-time households on the same streets. Outside town, Grayson County opens up into farms and land.
On any home near the New River, we'll check the flood zone and what flood insurance would cost before you write an offer. Right now I have 329 Grayson Street in Fries for sale, and everything else I have listed is on my listings page.
How I help in Fries
A home in Fries often sells to someone who doesn't live here yet: a person who found the river or the trail and wants a place near it. That's who my marketing reaches. Every listing gets its own plan, with professional photos, drone shots that show the river and the town, and targeted ads that find buyers in the cities they're coming from. The whole plan is on how I sell a home.
Nearby
Route 94 connects Fries with Galax, where most people go for shopping, work and the Old Fiddler's Convention. High school students attend Grayson County High School in Independence. Fries holds its own Old-Time Fiddlers' and Bluegrass Convention every August and the Festival by the New River every September.
